Staff Show How it’s Done in University Challenge!

One of the traditional events in the ‘Aspire’ programme is Bishop Thomas Grant School’s own version of the famous TV quiz show University Challenge, often described as the hardest quiz show on TV. In the first round of the competition staff show students how it’s all done, answering questions such as:
“First isolated from the plants of the nightshade family in 1828, which alkaloid has the formula C10H14N2?” and “In the Gregorian calendar, what is the hundredth day of a non-leap year?”
In a very close contest, with Mr Brzezicki firing the questions, Mr Burke’s team (Magdalene College, Streatham) with Ms De Stefano, Mr Holliday and Ms Smith beat ‘Brixton College of the Dark Arts’ despite some strong interventions from their staff opponents Ms Saleem, Mr McDonald, Ms Kelly and Mr Downton.

In the real competition Luke and Mark House won their competitions in the preliminary round v Matthew and John respectively – 90-75 and 125-45. The final was hotly contested and actually ended in a tie at 90 points each. Mark House team captain Emma Mansell bravely answered questions on origins of the days of the week, medicine, the classical world, musicals and battles, but this wasn’t enough to beat the Luke team, for whom Ethan Ah Soo Leen, veteran of previous competitions, stepped in with answers on Ireland, penguins, volcanic islands and football, along with the final tie break winner with Colorado as the river flowing through Arizona in the US.

Full teams were:
Luke – Evan, Auranya, Ethan, Max and Kamil
Mark- Rowan, Ella, Amy, Emma and William
