Victory for Maths over Science in Staff University Challenge 2018

After the recent staff Vs students debate as part of the ASPIRE programme co-ordinators Ms Kelly and Ms Grey put together two staff teams to battle out Bishop Thomas Grant School’s own version of the famous TV quiz show University Challenge. In the coming weeks student representatives from the four houses will then have their chance to show their knowledge in their own version of the competition.

Host for this popular contest was, as ever, Head of English Mr Brzezicki, who brings his own brand of humour to the occasion, describing University Challenge as “The most difficult quiz show on TV, where contestants play for honour and not money.”
Representing Magdalen College, Streatham, were Ms Branson, Ms Saleem, and Mr Taylor, with team captain and Science expert Mr Burke. The opponents, Brixton College of the Dark Arts, were captained by Maths expert Mr Barrio, along with Ms Smith, Ms Thompson and Mr Taylor.

An exciting and entertaining show was highlighted by some speedy interventions by Head of History Mr Taylor, whose knowledge of prohibition in America and famous generals drew instant applause from the audience. In the end, despite a strong performance from Mr Burke’s team, this proved to be not enough to beat the overall strength of the Dark Arts team, with captain Mr Barrio, already a hero from last year’s winning performance, again showing that mental arithmetic is indeed a very valuable skill when it comes to winning quizzes. Final score – Magdalen (Mr Burke) 125 Vs Dark Arts (Mr Barrio) 170.

Well done to all who took part, and we now look forward to the student version of University Challenge later this term.
