Wednesday 26th September saw the annual European Day of Languages provide a wonderful opportunity for Bishop Thomas Grant School to celebrate both the importance of learning another language as well as the school’s own cultural diversity.
Various activities took place, including activities in class ranging from discussing the importance of learning languages in Year 9 to highly-competitive Spelling Bee class competitions for Year 7 French, German and Spanish classes as well as a languages quiz in form time. Answers for the quiz were submitted from forms across the whole school, with 11MC and 11BE being crowned joint winners, with an amazing 21 correct answers out of a possible 22! This was no mean feat as the questions were about a wide range of languages, from Swedish to Swahili!
The languages department also held a poster competition for Years 7 and 8 to promote the importance of languages. The winner was Soraya De-Abreu of 7MP.
The international flavour of the day was even reflected in the canteen where the day’s menus were translated into various other European languages and there was a definite buzz around the school, with many members of staff greeting one another in different languages – from Gaelic to Greek.
