Key Stage 3 Modern Foreign Languages

In Year 7, the vast majority of pupils study two languages, with the most able taking Latin as one of their two languages.  The topics studied in Year 7 MFL are:

  • Introducing yourself
  • Saying where you live
  • School
  • Family and friends
  • Free time
  • Describing your home and where you live
  • Saying what there is in a town
  • Different methods of transport
  • Asking for and giving directions
  • Buying food and drink

Homework:

Homework is set every lesson and students should aim to spend approximately 35 minutes per homework, as well as 15-20 minutes every day completing online exercises from their languages "Visa Card".

In Year 8, pupils in the x-band continue to study two languages.  The topics studied in Year 8 in German and French are:

  • The weather
  • Describing a past holiday
  • Using the perfect tense
  • Shopping
  • Pocket money
  • TV programmes
  • Saying what you do after school
  • Parts of the body
  • At the doctor’s
  • Healthy and unhealthy eating
  • Talking about clothes
  • Daily routine
  • Making plans in the context of a school exchange
In Spanish the topics covered are:
  • Talking about friends
  • Nationality
  • Daily routine
  • Weekend activities
  • Weather
  • Food
  • Healthy and unhealthy eating
  • Clothes
  • Sightseeing
The grammatical structures covered are:
  • Present tense of regular verbs
  • Opinions and justifications
  • Comparatives
  • Superlatives
  • Connectives
  • Adjectival agreement
  • The Conditional
  • The simple future

  • Talking about how environmentally friendly you are
  • Saying how well you get on with different people
  • Saying what you think of famous people
  • Describing a disastrous date
  • Discussing characters in a TV soap opera
  • Talking about problems and giving advice
  • Planning a visit to the Target Language country
