About Bishop Thomas Grant School

Key Stage 3 Physical Education

At Key Stage 3, students have three double lessons of PE per fortnight.  During lessons pupils experience a dynamic and varied curriculum, including activities and learning opportunities from all national curriculum strands.  In Years 7 and 8 students follow an innovative and personalised weekly games afternoon, as well as a double core PE lesson.

All Key Stage 3 PE lessons are taught in single gender groups and setting is based upon ability.

The sporting activities undertaken by boys and girls at Key Stage 3 are as follows:

  • Transition Games
  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics/Trampolining
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Striking and Fielding
  • Table Tennis

Students will study two sporting activities per term in their games afternoons and core PE lessons.  The tables below highlight what pupils will study each term.

In Physical Education students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding across 3 strands:

Social Me

  • Engagement in Physical Education
  • Character
  • Leadership

Thinking Me

  • Decision making
  • Analysis of performance
  • Independent learning

Physical Me

  • Skill development
  • Competitiveness
  • My healthy active lifestyle

For each sporting activity students will be given a grade from 1-9 in each of the 3 separate strands (Social, Thinking and Physical).

Within the physical strand attainment may differ due to the activity studied therefore grades given each term for the physical strand may fluctuate based on a pupil’s ability within each activity.  At the end of each year pupils will be given an average score in the physical strand only.  Progress will be determined in the physical strand only when the students return to that activity the following year.  Attainment within the social and thinking strands will be ongoing throughout the course of the key stage and therefore will indicate progress made from term to term.

How Key Stage 3 grades inform pathways into Key Stage 4?

In Physical Education at KS4 students have the opportunity to study either BTEC PE or GCSE PE.

The content that informs the assessment for these courses is not covered during the Key Stage 3 Physical Education National Curriculum therefore attainment at Key Stage 3 cannot be used to predict a flight path of attainment throughout Key Stage 4.

Once students are enrolled onto BTEC or GCSE PE courses, data from the physical strand of assessment at Key Stage 3 PE, Mathematics, English and Science grades will be used to determine flight paths and target grades for students.
