Course content

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is broadly equivalent to one A Levels in Art & Design.

100% of all students who completed BTEC Art & Design and applied to Art school successfully gained places.

Throughout all projects there is a strong focus on the vocational aspect of the course, there are visits to various places of Artistic interest including exhibitions, galleries and day trips out to collect & gather various primary research. Students will also meet professional artists currently working in the Creative Industries.

Since national changes have been made to all vocational curriculums, the course now contains both externally and internally assessed units.

The course is made up of four units:

Unit 1: Visual recording (External)

Unit 2: Critical and Contextual (External)

Unit 3: The Creative Process (Mandatory)

Unit 12: Fine Art Materials and Techniques (Optional).

The external Units will come in the form of set briefs from the exam board and will be externally assessed by the exam board.

Unit 3 The Creative Process and Unit 12 Fine Art Materials and Techniques will come in the form of set briefs from the Art Department and will be assessed internally by your teacher.

Students are expected to take advantage of links with Higher Educational institutions and use their extra-curricular time to attend Saturday Schools, Summer schools and Foundation/Degree Show exhibitions and Tours.

Assessment

The course is part internally and part externally assessed. Mandatory Content 83% and External Assessment 58%. Other Skills Developed Students will develop skills to enable project based thematic enquiry and response, sequential development of ideas, expressive response offering unrestricted exploration and development. Visual research, analysis, observation and recording offering opportunities to work in a range of media. Critical appraisal and analysis.

Career Value

Students who successfully complete BTEC L3 Extended Certificate are welcomed into all Art institutions as they have a well-rounded and broad portfolio. All Higher Education establishments judge a students based on their portfolio above everything else. The Art Department has strong links with Higher Educational Institutions but is also building links with local businesses in order to create Apprenticeship opportunities. Nationals are NQF Level 3 qualifications designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualifications in a range of vocational sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualifications provide opportunities to continue on to higher education, degree and professional development programmes provide progression opportunities within the same cognate or related areas of study within universities and other institutions.

Key Skills As well as covering BTEC level study of Art and Design, this course will enable you to develop some key skills, which will be essential to you whatever you go on to do afterwards. The key skills you can develop during this course are: · Communication · Information Technology · Working with others · Improving own learning and performance · Problem solving
