Bishop Thomas Grant School

National Tutoring Programme

Welcome to the National Tutoring Programme at BTG for the academic year 2022 to 2023. The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) provides our school with funding to spend on targeted academic support.  As we return to pre-pandemic ways of living, our focus on helping pupils catch up on lost learning is turning towards the long-established challenge of tackling the attainment gap. Strong evidence suggests that the model of targeted, academic support and working with small groups and individuals, can make a difference to academic progress that can be expressed in months.

The aims of the National Tutoring Programme at Bishop Thomas Grant School

1.    To learn cornerstone knowledge to facilitate learning across a subject curriculum

2.    To practise core skills that are essential to success as a learner in that subject

3.    To enable students to experience success, to boost confidence, and strengthen                                     relationships with staff

4.    To motivate students to better engage with school and aspire to engage their learning

Last year (2021 - 2022) , we used the funding to provide highly tailored tuition support for our students in year 10, to help those whose education has been most impacted by the pandemic. Our extensive tuition programme involved 90 Year 10 students across the curriculum Subjects of Maths, Science, English, Geography, History, Drama, ICT, German, French, Business studies, and Health and Social Care.  There was a total of 23 weekly sessions running and these provide highly popular with strong attendance and support from parents.

This year (2022 - 2023) , support and intervention has continued with the same cohort, now in Year 11.  There is an extensive number of boosters before and after school for all of our examination groups in Year 11, through to Year 13.   We are also running academic support and mentoring to our younger students in Year 7, 8 and 9 in English and Maths.  Students identified for the programme receive tuition in these core subjects in very small groups with specialist staff to develop their numeracy and literacy skills and confidence in these areas of the curriculum.  We are now starting the NTP Summer school once again for this year's Year 10 students to build on the success of last year's programme.  There are 14 subjects offering tutoring and with a total of 27 groups running each week involving 29 staff and over 100 of our Year 10 students in before or after school sessions.

If you have any questions regarding the programme, please contact either Mr Todd or Ms Waterman.
