Bishop Thomas Grant Rugby Star Meets His Heroes to Talk About Mental Health in the Game

My name is Shaun and I have been playing rugby for many years now both inside and outside of school. I love the game! The sport has taught me discipline and I have learnt that respect is essential to forming a cohesive team. Over the summer I was given the opportunity to work with Harlequins in conjunction with ‘Movember’ (Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as Anxiety, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. More information can be found here, https://uk.movember.com/) on a new programme called "ahead of the game". This programme was made to raise awareness about mental health in sports and the wellbeing of players. I was fortunate to meet Chris Robshaw (pictured with Shaun) and Marcus Smith. Chris is a well-known rugby star for club and country (England) and Marcus is also known as one of the most promising upcoming England stars and is a key player for his club. Both players play for Harlequins. We had a fabulous day joking around and chatting whilst we made a promotional video for the programme. It was important to have taken part in this video as it will raise awareness of mental health in sports and rugby for young athletes and encourage them to look after themselves mentally. The two professionals gave us all advice on ways to look after ourselves and highlighted that it is important to stay both mentally and physically healthy in all walks of life. For me personally it was a dream day with some of my heros!
